Sorry, I was replying to Hullguy's post with the picture of his Chinese toaster which is misleading. As long as the house ground is intact all appliances in the house are just as safe as they were when power was provided by the utility company.

Good and not so good news.

I have the electrician come to install the 50A generator inlet for the house.

Ran a 30A twist lock to 14-50NEMA dog bone, then generator cable. Was able to run all the 120V no problem. I did have to disconnect the ground from the inlet box to make the truck work (both house and truck are still grounded), as many have said.

However, when I tried to run one of the A/C unit, it overloaded the truck. I then switched to the 11kw generator I have (8k running with propane). It did hit 10.8kw on the generator display, when the compressor started, and that is with the soft starter that I had the electrician installed today as well. Guess I'll either live without AC using the truck, or use truck as a back up power source.
Surprised to hear this. I'm running on the Generac Homelink panel with split mini breakers so have (12) 120V circuits plus (1) 240V for 3 ton AC unit with a Micro Air Easy Start. The Micro Air dropped AC amps from 50 to 12 on compressor start up. I put it in service with all breakers off then close one by one, doing the AC last. Truck load shows around 50% loaded with everthing on.

I doubt all residential air conditioners are alike with compressor start-up draw. And even with the aftermarket soft-start options, they aren't all tamed equally.

There are some really efficient residential systems out there with variable speed compressors, as well as fans, and they slowly ramp by design. No need for a softstart since they already are by design.

Do you need to use Bluetooth and app to adjust your micro air? Or do you just run the factory settings?

How does a wire with absolutely no connection to an electrical power source work if I am wrong?

It's a code thing.

I'm camping in a State Park with the grandkids. I think the "code" for electric bicycles are Class 2. Class 2 is basically a Code, or standard, which caps the top speed of the bicycle at 20mph.

But the electric bike has a software "cheat" for putting it into Class 3. (Class 3 = 28mph)

So yeah, there are people behind desks deciding what the codes and standards are for our bicycles too. They are just looking out for us. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The irony of the Class 2 spec for the State Park is that where we are mostly riding, the posted speed limit is 10mph.

I think it clear by now the codes don't necessarily match up with the real world experience. The Powerboost absolutely can power your residential panel, and do so safely. (safe enough for this Class 3 outlaw going 10mph) But not necessarily powering that panel to code.

The National Electrical Code isn’t written by people behind desks! It’s a consortium of trades people, industry, scientists. They are all listed at the start of the book.
Yes the Powerboost can power your house even if your wiring is wrong. But why do something wrong when it’s easy to install the right equipment for a minimal up charge and protect your family and property?

For the same reason I didn''t wear a helmet yesterday while riding a bicycle going 10mph?

It's a risk assessment I made.

And I might have been the only person I saw yesterday not wearing a bicycle helmet. I was living dangerously!

By the way, I'm not against wiring to code or wearing bicycle helmets. I'd recommend both, in fact.

What minimum upcharge are we talking about putting a transfer box that can run all equipment of the house including the ACs?

At near 70, I look back at the things I got away with. All I can say is that there IS evidence, at least in my opinion, that you ain't going until it's your time.

And you ain't staying past it either.

Even if I'm absolutely mistaken, I'd still argue for squeezing every grin/laugh you can out of today. (not exactly the easiest thing to do sitting at my desk right now, but it's not impossible)
