I have searched to see if there was another thread, but did not find anything. I was wondering if there was an alternative, aftermarket, solution for the cheap plastic tailgate step cover? When pulling things out of the bed, it catches on that lip, and tears it off, but most recently, I was hauling gravel, and a bunch of rocks got stuck in the gap, ultimately warping the plastic. Is there anything out there that eliminates all of this by a better design? I see a bunch of videos on replacing them, but not with anything that resolves the issues, just the inevitable replacement of this piece, each time. Ideas and suggestions are most welcomed.

When I haul any loose material (dirt, gravel, mulch, etc) I 'line' the bed with a tarp that hangs over sides, front, and back/tailgate. When the tailgate is lowered to empty the load it hangs over the back edge.

Prevents stuff from getting into nooks & gaps and makes unloading the final bits much easier.

Personally, I've never had a problem with dragging boxes & such out of the bed - my step cover is very slightly lower than the 'flat' of the lowered tailgate. If yours is 'proud' or even 'flush', perhaps it is mis-aligned?

Good Luck!

I was wondering about this also. I hauled some hay and the grass gets every where.

For a working truck this seem wrong to have something can be easily cleaned . I like the step, but details matter.

I purchased a new OEM cover and attached it. Then I went and added I believe large dome head rivets to hold it on.

I also added 1/4 inch aluminum rivets in place of the push pins on the rest of the tailgate plastics.

Have you found that this helps keeping dirt and stuff out of that gap between the cover and the metal?
