I believe there is a proximity sensor on the truck that detects the key near it, so you don't have to unlock the truck to open the tailgate. If I have my keys in my pocket and walk past my locked truck, I can hear something click and zone lighting comes on briefly. I can open my tailgate with 2 pushed when that happens. If my keys aren't on my person, everything stays locked.

Long story long, experiment with and without the keys nearby.
There are proximity sensors in each front door and 1 in the tailgate.

for the physical button inside the cab, yes.
for the physical tailgate button, shouldn't be.
Mine had the tailgate recall and both inside and out are double tap to open. It's for unintentional openings. They're all two punch now.

Interestingly, I had a software update complete this morning and the tailgate is back to one touch activation with the button on the outside regardless of it being locked or unlocked….

Is it suppose to open partially or fully when pressing the button twice ? It seems that mine just opens partially!

I’ve noticed on mine that sometimes I need to press on the tailgate while I push the release button. Not sure if there is too much pressure against it that it won’t release or what the deal is with it.

You have to push the button twice, even if it's unlocked. Same as from inside the cab.
Strange but my 21 KR tailgate still unlocks inside the truck with only one push of the tailgate button. And yes if you have the key on you , you can unlock it with the tailgate button and not push on the key fob.
Yeah one button push from cab and double everywhere else…

speaking of tailgates…I notice if I leave mine down for a couple hours, I lose soft opening next time I use the tailgate. Theres no better feeling like pushing that button and feeling that tailgate slam down

The power closing feature does time out after some time, I don’t know the reason or under what circumstances. Happens from time to time. If I really need the feature, opening a door resets the power to the tailgate motor.
