I want to drive in 2 wheel drive sports mode. But I noticed that when you spin the drive mode selector to change modes, sports mode always defaults to 4A and it starts changing it to 4x4. I usually then press the 2H button to get back to sports mode in 2 wheel drive. Is there a better way to change to sports mode and keep it in 2H?

When I start the truck up again, it asks me if I want to keep it in sports mode and if I say yes, it tries to put in 4A even if it was in 2H sports mode before. Does this sound normal and by design?

I am not really liking the user interface for drive modes.

I wish the drive mode selector allowed you to cycle through the various modes, and then engage that mode only AFTER hitting some type of ENTER/OK button.

Having the truck engage the various modes dynamically, especially those that affect the drive system (2H/4A/4H/4L) while driving, just doesn't feel right.

If I cycle through and briefly hit a mode that suddenly starts trying to engage 4WD, then land on 2WD mode, the gyrations of engaging / disengaging the drive system seem unnecessary and causes undue wear.

I completely agree. And I generally do not need 4A most of the time so would prefer 2H to be the first choice for Sports mode. Granted, I don't have all the modes on my X3 that are on the F-150, but sports mode on my X3 is just a button.

At first I thought that was what the button on the drive mode selector did until I realized that does something else.

I can understand your frustration. It essentially turns it into an all wheel drive truck. Which is really what you want in "Sport Mode." It will help with launches and cornering.

I often wonder if you have the 4A why/when would you NOT use it?

I'll only use 4A on slippery / snow covered roads.

Would only use 4H if going through very deep snow / sand, and 4L only when going slow (and straight) in conditions were I might get stuck, at a boat ramp, stump pulling, or the like.

For all other conditions, 2H is the mode I'll be in. No need to engage the full drivetrain if not needed.

I generally agree with those points, but in talking with my dealer it seems the 4A does that determination automatically ("if needed") - seems in many dry/hard road conditions there are still times when the road will change - wet/gravel etc or just hard acceleration. I did not get the feature, but his description sounded like a nice feature and the expectation was to normally operate in 4A even though most of the time the rear drive train would receive the torque

I really wish that the truck would remember the last mode used automatically without having to hit ok. If you don't catch the ok button, it reverts back to normal but seems to stay in whatever 4x4 mode was previously selected. If It automatically reverts back to normal from sport it goes into normal with 4A.

I wish there was a way to save drive modes as presets that mapped to a physical button you could push. I don't always want to be in Sports mode but if I need to get to an on ramp or some situation where I'm anticipating a need to go fast, being able to just push a button to activate would be so much better than having to spin the wheel of fortune.

X LT does not have 4a so sport mode stays in 2h.

I would agree with that too. Definitely don’t want to be wearing out that transfer case if I could avoid it!
