If you're driving on a dry road in 4X4, it'll do that. It's the drive train winding up without any way to spin.

I did notice that it only does it at low speeds cause it goes away when speeding up but once stopped and restarted it continues.

Don't drive in 4X4 on dry pavement. You will tear up something in your drivetrain.

Okay…let’s back up. You’ve got an STX, right? So your 4x4 mode selector doesn’t have a 4A position. What mode are you driving in? (4H, 4L, 2H?). Where are you driving? Dry pavement? Does the popping sound occur in 2H?

If you are in 4H or 4L on drive pavement, and don’t have the sound in 2H, that popping sound you are hearing is driveline binding or wheel skip due to binding. Read your manual. 4H and 4L CANNOT be used on dry pavement. They shouldn’t even be used on wet pavement. They’re for off road use. You will eventually damage your truck driving in 4x4 on pavement. Similarly, if you attempt to turn with your rear locker engaged on pavement you’ll also experience wheel skip.

Only vehicles with a 4A (Lariat and higher) setting IN 4A MODE can use 4x4 on dry pavement. Even they cannot use 4H or 4L on dry pavement.
