Part Sleuths Objective – Can You Tell Me?

I am looking to install an under tailgate brake light bar. I just do not think the brake light footprint from the back of the truck is big enough to easily see. My topper blocks the trucks roof brake light and even though it has its own, it too is very small.

My tailgate has this attachment on it and in another thread someone suggested to get some flathead bolts to help lower the height. I plan to do this but I need to find out what size these bolts are. I was going to just remove one and drive around to hardware stores to try to match it up, but this community has some real talented part sleuths in it.

I figured I would throw this out on the forum in case someone is up to a little detective work. What size are these bolts?

appears to be an M8 bolt that is 21mm long. They do not specify the thread pitch....so you'll have to pull one out to know if it is a fine thread or not, likely it is the standard 1.25.

You too can be a parts sleuths. go to parts.ford.com and you can look up parts using your VIN so you actually get info that is for your specific truck, since different models have different stuff, it is a good idea to do so.

My problem is that I'm not a 20 yr mechanic, so I need to be a clairvoyant to figure out what something is called to do a proper search.

You are 100% correct there, but with a little luck when you search the general area of the truck, like "tailgate" you get a nice blown up image with all of the associated parts shown and can usually drill it down from there to find what you are looking for.

But the parts website does still suck, some times there is no image and then you're back to square 1 and sometimes you get the perfect image with all the parts and part numbers. Then again sometime you get an image and the only thing it doesn't have is exactly what you are looking for, so good luck out there! At least we have this great community of very knowledgeable people to lean back on!
