LT Terra Grappler G3 VS SL Recon Grappler

I am looking for some new tires. I really think 295/70/18 will be the size to go and I am ininterested in the Terra Grappler G3 which I hear is a great AT tire with amazing wet traction but at the 295/70/18 it only comes in an LT rated tire.

Based on some research the LT would ride rougher for a 1/2 ton truck, so I am considering the 295/70/18 Recon Grappler that is offered in an SL. However, I hear the wet traction can be hit or miss.

I would appreciate your thoughts and to hear your thoughts, and ride difference between LT and SL tires.

I've had two different friends that took Recon Grapplers off their trucks with less than 20k on them. Both of them hated the wet and winter performance.

I drove one of them and couldn't believe how bad the lateral traction and stopping performance was during wet conditions. I don't recall the ride quality of them (I think both were LT's).

My Grappler G3's (LT rated 275/70/18)are great tires, especially since I bought them on sale through Discount Tire for about a 20% discount. The ride and handling is much better than the BFG (275/60/20) and Mickey Thompson (295/70/18) that I ran previously.

I would say these tires are very comparable to Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone for quality, ride, and handing.

Just look at the tread, the recon has hardly any siping, it’s a hybrid All Terrain tire with some mud tire features, not going to be good on wet or icy roads, the Ridge grapplers aren’t any better, I ran Ridge Grapplers for 3 days in the winter here in Colorado and had Discount Tire swap em out for a different tire because they had no traction.

The Nittos are a lighter weight LT than most others in the size I chose. I prefer the way these handle rather than feeling a sidewall fold over in a corner like I’ve had with other SL tires.

Me neither, this is a pavement princess no doubt.
But like the aggressive look over the competition, plus we've had some on work trucks last over 50K

Air em down to about 38 and it won’t be that stiff, but you’ll notice the loss in power, more shifting from the trans and your fuel mileage deterioration immediately. Can’t go from a 45 lb tire to a 65 lb tire and not notice it, been there done that, even though guys will say-its not that bad it’s noticeable.

Yeah, the Terra grapplers are a class E which. Might be a bit too much for what I need.

Ride quality is going to be dependent on tire pressure and which suspension you’re running. Each of those are probably more important than tire choice…….unless you choose some junk brand or a tire that is known for very stiff sidewalls.

I run my front at 38 psi and rear is 34 psi in my LT Nittos, with zero abnormal wear or excessive heating. If I bump them up to around 50 psi, the expansion joints and potholes are just a bit more noticeable, but nothing that I would ever consider excessive.

I’m picky about ride quality, but my wife is very perceptive of any discomfort due to being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. She noticed a large improvement after I installed the Eibach suspension and my original 295/70/18 Mickey Thompsons (also LT rated). Her comfort is a huge reason why I’ve made certain choices about buying and modifying my F150. When I Installed the slightly smaller Nittos, she actually said my truck was more comfortable and didn’t notice the smaller bumps as much.
