Truck is a Job 1 2021 F-150 Limited. I’m a long-time viewer of various F-150 forums, first post. My previous two F-150’s were relatively trouble free.

In June 2021 dealer reconfigured the GWM in response to CSP 21—2B33. My truck has the 1.7.1 syndrome and not being very technically savvy I let the dealer do the update starting April 2022. Tech claimed the GWM is up to date. The tech ran the battery down a few times attempting and failing to update using TSB 22-2150. Tech emailed Ford. Ford replied to be sure to have good internet connection and have battery connected to charger. After charging battery, resetting the battery monitor system, and verifying internet connection the tech tried again and failed and the “module is now locked out of recovery.” Tech emailed Ford and is waiting for a reply.

Since the truck is locked out of recovery, the dealer is done until it gets an email from Ford. Calling Ford is an exercise in futility (don’t ask how I know.) CSP campaign #22B08, Electronic Control Module Recovery, is still open on FordPass. I just need to know if the truck can be updated. If not, so be it and I will move on. Fortunately, I have the truck and lane centering works well enough. My VIN is 1FTFW1ED1MFB59560.

Any information and guidance will be truly appreciated.

I think they have to replace the APIM at this point. Once it gets to the lockout stage, there's nothing you can do.

I’m wanting on my new apim I am in the same situation. My apim gets here soon I’m told I hope the can install a new apim and update it without bricking it. They will eventually order a apim but they wait to the last possible time.

I could be wrong but someone who had a locked out of update APIM, as the result of too many failed attempts, chose to put the necessary USB stick into the truck and just drive until it hopefully kicked off.
It did, roughly two weeks later.

So although FRDS was locked from attempting another attempt, the good Ole drive and be patient mode eventually succeeded.

What I don't know is whether the successful update unlocked the APIM from later APIM updates. Nor has it been long enough to know whether OTA can now work with the APIM.

Regardless, I sure wish I understood the reason for locking the APIM. I know some feel it's a security measure, but if so it's kinda pointless to allow 15 nefarious attempts.

Thanks for your insight.

Unfortunately, the dealer is only interested in an update method prescribe by Ford and will not discuss the recovery until Ford responds to an email. I can’t justify buying the equipment, license and learning how to do an update to create an USB drive that may, or may not, work. That being said, perhaps someone could download the specific file(s) from FDRS for my truck and email them to me to create an USB drive, or mail a USB drive they created. Of course, I’d pay a reasonable fee.

Unfortunately FDRS doesn't allow that, you can only run the procedure which then kicks off the USB creation while physically connected to the truck.

If he had the correct files on the USB stick, he could update his APIM.
But few folks would know or have the necessary files for his specific truck.

It would be VERY helpful if the dealership had the USB stick that their many failed attempts would have created.

Good morning, Jim! Could you please send us a private message with your dealership information? I would like to look into these locked out of recovery concerns for you on my end. Thanks!

Latest wringle on a locked out apim. Ford has apims but they have to install some software before they can ship to the dealership so now I am wanting on this. Getting close to four months of struggle with this apim module. Always an excuse and delay at every step.

Need new dealer. Current dealer techs are not good with either high or low tech. Tech can’t do an update. Don’t believe entirely Ford’s fault as many forum reports of dealer success.

Automatic updates turned on for a few minutes and then turned off. Don’t know what that means, if anything.

Started to hear a tapping sound and looked for the source. I may be retired but I can still crawl under a truck. I found loose insulation and a scratched drive shaft. Dealer did a recall on my Powerboost in January 2022 for loose insulation. Tech didn’t recognize that he was working on a Powerboost and did the repair for a non Powerboost. The truck is drivable, and recall will be redone when parts show up.

Regarding updates I need to find a new dealer. Can a blocked APIM be updated by FDRS or is the only solution a new APIM? Would another dealer even want to try? Am I stuck waiting on Ford for a solution and having the same tech try again? Should I just bite the bullet and spend hundreds of dollars on the equipment and countless hours to do the Blue Cruise update by myself? Or just throw in the towel and look for another unicorn?

Your opinions and advice are welcomed

My story went to the shop for TSB2217 they bricked the apim. I bought FDRS and a monogoose could not get by the lockout. Took the truck to another dealer they had it for a week. In the background I was working with OTA department. After a week and an IT ticket the OTA people told the dealership to order a new APIM. The dealership was going to give me back the truck anyway since they were no longer actively troubleshooting just wanting for phone calls

If your apim is locked out don’t spend the money. The only you can do is create an apim update usb plug it in and hope (someone in these forums might volunteer to make that for you). That might work weeks down the road might not. But you can’t run the tsb to fix anything. I too am waiting for a new apim it’s been ordered for a few weeks ago. I do have the usb stick plugged in for the last month and the update has not started yet. Make them fix it. What’s scares me is the tech will brick the apim as well.

I qualify for lemon law in my state but they will me back wait I paid. They will sell it used for more money than I paid and a new king ranch is 20K more than I paid with less features. So I looked around, the toyota hybrid is not on lots yet and chevy super cruise truck not on the lot yet either. I have no good options unfortunately my best option is waiting for a new a apim. It really sucks there is no good path forward and no mechanism to get some type reward from ford.

It is horrible, call the OTA helpline the person that answers the phone cannot help you at all get it escalated there for some better luck. They were the only group that kept my truck moving forward and maintained daily contact, of course my truck is not fixed yet.

Unless @Jesse-Infotainment could work some magic, I think an APIM locked due to too many attempts can only be fixed by replacement. You could try creating the USB update yourself and just drive around hoping, but the dealer wouldn't do that for you.

I personally know of a locked APIM (due to dealership using up all the allowed attempts) that updated successfully from the "drive around with the USB stick inserted" method. I believe it kicked off at around the 2-week period?

That fellas' dealership has a new APIM on order for his truck. I'm guessing he will not be letting them touch his functioning APIM. :)
