TL;DR: Wanted a used PB, 22 and 23 had too many chip shortages, 21 couldn't find options I wanted. Ordered a 24, dealer sales guy (recommended by a friend) was awful and kind of an a-hole, wouldn't help get a local truck from another dealer. Drove 3 hours to Detroit and bought it, cancelled my order with the local guy.
So my 2012 Lariat SC Ecoboost has around 230k and while the body is still in great shape, it's starting to have lots of small issues. I decided it was time to upgrade by purchasing a used truck. I fell in love with the Powerboost introduced in 2021, so that naturally limited my search for 21 through 24. After thoroughly reviewing all available options and comparing to what I wanted, it made sense for me to get a Platinum with a few additional options. Essentially, I wanted the CCD (not compatible with FX4), onboard scales/smart hitch, max recline seats, a few other things not included in the 2021 Platinum.
A friend of mine is in charge of the local large Ford dealer's service side so I naturally asked him if he had a go to sales guy he would recommend. He did and I first reached out to the sales guy in Jan 24. Basically told him what I wanted and gave a rough range of price depending on condition and mileage. He said should be no problem.
The issue started when week after week went by without a single email, text, or phone call from him. So every few weeks I started pinging him. I got the standard answers: can't find one close enough (distance), can't find one with those options, the local ones at auctions are too expensive, etc. I'm not convinced he was even looking. So I took matters into my own hands and began checking websites like Autotrader. I found tons that met my conditions but of course some were very far away. After checking with the sales guy, he said they could trade with most dealers within a 200 mile radius.
So I would check almost daily, find ones that met everything, send them to him and rarely hear anything back for almost a week. Then I'd ping him and he'd say that one isn't available (I'd check and it was sold because he drug his feet). Then the well started to dry up. Couldn't find any that had the features I wanted.
Fast forward to May and my wife is now sick of me complaining and said just buy a new one. So I told the sales guy and they had a couple of 24 trucks between their 2 dealerships but none had the features I wanted (I added pro-access tailgate to my wish list since I was going 2024 and luckily Job 2 had began recently so I knew there were some out there). So off to Autotrader I went again. And I found a small number of them that were in the 200 mile range with the features I wanted.
I would tell my sales guy, he would drag his feet or not respond at all and then the truck would sell. I began emailing him the link to the dealership website and then calling him. He was pretty rude on the phone and email responses I received and basically said I should just order one to get what I want. So I went in on 5/31 and ordered one to my specs. I did what YouTube and the forum suggested by only includes features I wanted that could not be added later (did not include spray in bed liner, tonneau cover, etc.) The sales guy agreed that if I found one they could get, we could go that route and cancel the order (or if it was too far along to cancel, they would just keep the truck and sell it).
After hearing nothing other than the order was confirmed and was unscheduled clean for about 4 weeks (I know this is not a long time compared to many in this forum), and receiving crappy email responses when I asked for status, I began regretting the order. Plus, seeing some people on the forum still unscheduled for orders from last Fall, I was worried mine would not get built. So I kept finding trucks with my specs in Detroit. I would send them via email, call, and then get some excuse about someone being out today so they couldn't call or since it was a green window sticker special order, it was likely already sold. After doing this dance a few times, I gave up.
The very last one I had emailed and called my sales guy about, I reached out directly to the dealership in Detroit. Let me tell you, the sales guy here was freaking amazing. It's like he actually wanted to serve me so that he could earn a commission, not just get one without doing any work. It was indeed a special order that someone had placed, but they contacted the customer and they chose to not go forward with it. Mind you, I was in Canada for my day job last week and did all of the deal back and forth over the phone/email while sitting in the hotel after work.
Drove to Detroit on Saturday, finalized the deal and drove the truck home. Smoothest transaction I've ever done. This one already has the spray in bed liner with a tonneau cover. Order with the local guy was cancelled and they are refunding my deposit. Pics attached
