This week my truck will be crossing over the 100K mile mark and taking the battery warranty with it. Contemplating a new truck, but I really like my ride and except for one or two minor issues, don't have a lot of complaints.

So...my question to the masses, is staying with my current truck accepting more risk than I should?

A new truck opens you up to risk too! Unless you have money to burn you're better off dollar wise keeping a vehicle "you really like" that only has one or two minor issues. If you'll have to finance a new truck then it would be an even bigger mistake!

Heck, I do have money to burn but still wouldn't trade a good truck for an expensive new one.

A replacement battery pack is $2653. Can't find any aftermarket options yet. A new truck would cost more out of pocket. If everything else is sound in your current truck, I would lean towards keeping it. The battery is small and Ford only lets a small portion be used. You can pull the extended OBD PIDs and see its current health. That would give a gauge of where it stands.

Drive Motor Battery Pack - Ford (ML3Z-10B690-A)
2021-2023 Ford F-150 - ml3z10b690a
  • MSRP:$2,837.65
  • Discount:$184.45 (6.5% off)
  • Sale Price:$2,653.20

Not that it's inexpensive, but my thought was the battery was considerable more expensive than that.

Thanks for the info. I'll check later on the health of the battery.

Definitely agree about new truck risk. Thanks for the input. Appreciate it.

Even though it has 100k miles it still is just a 2021. Battery pack will probably be the least of the risk you are taking on by keeping it.

Make a new truck payment to yourself each month and watch that money grow. Drive what you got and are happy with for another year or two and when you hit 150K start to consider a new one. You will have a nice wad of money for that new one by doing this. Yes you will take on some risk with a truck with 100k miles but that must be a lot of highway miles and if you changed your oil religiously, that mileage will most likely be nothing.

Good luck with decision.

Time for someone to go for it with a PB and report on how far it can go.
At 100k miles would drive the wheels off of it and keep reporting in on your progress.

I'll do my best.

To add my $.02 on a previous conversation, i'd say 60K, maybe more, of these miles are BC miles with only one real problem. Coming into Albuquerque, NM last year there was a white line painted in the middle of my lane and a rather larger Prevost diesel pusher, driving next to me. Fortunately, my hands were on the wheel at the time ;-)

Do you pay for a Consumer Reports subscription and fill out the reliability surveys by chance?

Congrats on the 100k!

Edit* I would check with other Ford hybrid owners who may have similar style battery packs. There are no pre-2021 PowerBoosts to draw experience from.

Yes, I'm a subscriber and a faithful survey completer.

I can't imagine it's worth much. I've seen Lariats with the 2.7 at 100K for $30K.

You can get low mileage PB batts from salvaged trucks for less than $1k as well if you start to have problems. There's no real demand for the batts as they're not large capacity so it's a buyers market on them.

I wonder how easy it is the change the HV battery since it’s below the bed.

As to the traction battery pack... I have a 2006 Escape Hybrid, bought new & 450,000 miles, that is still on its original traction battery pack. That is a NiMH pack. If Ford set up this Li-Ion pack properly, I would expect it to be just as good on its lifetime.

Basically drop the fuel tank, drive shaft, and the exhaust. It's half under the cab and half under the bed.
