Aluminum Toolbox Question - don't they get too hot?

I see a lot of people on the street with aluminum crossbed toolboxes and I have always wondered: don't they get too hot to touch?

(Sorry if this is a dumb question but I don't personally know someone who has one.)

I've had this 'bright-finish' (albeit a bit oxidized after all these years) aluminum diamond plate toolbox on my 2005 F150 for decades, and yes, in full Texas sun it gets hot to the touch, but not nearly as hot as black. The 'bright-finish' has never been an issue insofar as glare on my OE factory tinted rear window.

Personally, I wouldn't ever consider a black toolbox in TX (but then, I wouldn't ever consider anything other than a white truck in TX ).

That's a Kobalt (Lowes) box, only 13" front-to-back and 13" top-to-bottom with a very low profile above the rail. I don't believe that one is made now, and I don't see many (any?) that size these days. For me it's a very handy box that takes little from my open bed space.

What toolboxes are you guys getting to fit with the factory drop-in box liner? I went to buy a used Weatherguard only to find that the angled corners at the front of the box liner interfere with getting the toolbox to sit flush against the wall! Had at least a three inch gap which looked goofy and took up extra box space. Suffice to say I went home disappointed and empty-handed that day.

No consolation for you but hopefully others considering a drop-in liner will take note and re-think other alternatives (go spray-in).

You could tape 1/2 styrofoam foam to the underside of the lid, the inside of the box will stay cooler.
