Not even 24 hrs after buying (lease) from the dealer (Fri 5/23). It literally had 30 miles when I drove off with it (and I put probably 15 or so of those during 2 test drives). Got home (about 10 miles from dealer) no issues. Truck is/was awesome! Went for breakfast the next morning (Sat 5/24) - again - no issues. Super digging the electric mode when just crawling through the neighborhood. Go to make a home depot run after lunch on Sat (still 5/24) not even 50 miles on it and less than 24 hrs after 'owning' it - screen is DEAD!! Initial thought is - 12V must be low. It's a new truck. May have sat in a lot for a while and drained. Connect some jumper cabled - let the other vehicle run for a while (even revving the other vehicle to get enough voltage)... still nothing.
Then figured - I'll unplug the 12V negative for a while to see if that will reset things. (Not sure if that even works on a hybrid with a giant battery). Nope nothing. Truck was driveable so despite having no gauges at all (full digital IP).... I fired up Waze on Carplay and went for a longer drive - again thinking things may have ran down while sitting at dealer, holding lot, etc etc. Nope nothing. Even tried swapping fobs as I found some posts that said that "fixed" it. Other posts said it came back after a while. Mine wasn't. The whole time the center console display was always working. But still tried the 'volume down, skip forward' two button hold trick. That rebooted the center screen as expected. Nothing on the gauge cluster/intrument panel. No even a flicker.
Didn't find too much on this site when looking for "blank display, blank gauge cluster, blank instrument panel, black instrument panel....etc". But did find a BUNCH of posts over on F150Lightning (sister site to this). Like CHRONIC problem for them. Eventually found a post. Intitially think that 'fuse 13' as described in that thread was maybe a Lightning only thing, I looked up in the owners manual online what the fuse # was for the instrument panel. Showed it was fuse 33. So tried that. Nothing. I was about to give and just decide on bringing it (dumping it actually) to the dealer on Tuesday morning after Memorial Day.
With nothing to lose and not being able to go to the dealer right away anyways, I tried fuse 13 like the Lightning guys were doing. In the regular F150 (powerboost too) manual, fuse 13 is labeled "steering column module" or something like that. What the hell, I'll try it anyway. Pulled the fuse (had the ignition on). Fuse was good, not blown. As soon as I put it back in - "ding.... ding.... ding..." the door chime started beeping. Then to my surprise the cluster fired back up. So this works on the PB as well!!! Of course broke some clips on the trim getting access to the idiotic placement of the fuse box behind the passenger kick panel. There were signs someone had been in there.... hmmm.... Shame on Ford for this. It's so widespread on Lightning. I'm surprised there aren't more posts here on 14G.
Of course since I drove it a for a bit with the cluster off... it has a check engine light saying in the app something like "your fuel gauge hasn't moved in a while - it may be stuck - please bring in for service".... Great.... Will see if it turns off after a few key cycles. Or maybe I'll fire up Forscan.
