I know there are several tire threads already, but still wanted to post about my situation.
Recently got a great deal on a dealer demo 2022 Lariat 3.5 EB with 3.55 gearing. The few hour trip home from the dealer, all interstate driving about 74mph, I averaged 21.3 MPG. In my limited highway driving the first week I was seeing 21-23 MPG. A week later I changed tires from the stock Hancook 275/60R20 to Mastercraft Courser Trail HD 275/65R20. I obviously knew it was an E rated tire and was more worried about the ride than MPG loss. I fully expected to lose 1-3 MPG. Well, after driving a few hundred miles on the tires, the ride is a little more firm, but nothing crazy. There’s obviously a little more noise, but again nothing that’s annoying or unexpected for an aggressive AT tire. What surprised me is the MPG hit. Driving on the highway like a grandpa 55-62mph, I see maybe 1-2 MPG loss, but in town and interstate driving, again 74mph, it has taken a big hit. Interstate I’m getting about 16-17 MPG! So depending on how you look at it, 4-6 MPG loss where a good portion of my driving will be. This surprised me going up just one tire size. I guess the truck/3.5 EB just doesn’t like the extra unsprung/rotational mass of the tires. About 16# per tire heavier. My buddy just got the same truck with 5.0 3.73 gearing, 2” level and same tire size (Cooper Discoverer LT) and said he’s only lost 2 MPG average. I checked my speedo with GPS and it’s only off 1 mph, 2mph once I get above 70mph.
Does this seem like excessive MPG loss? I feel like I’ve seen guys with 35” tires and levels not taking that much if a hit.
So I’m considering going back to stock size of 275/60R20 P rated 4 ply. I do really like these Courser Trail HD tires and think the 275/65R20’s look perfect on these trucks, so going back to stock size I want to keep a more aggressive AT tire, just lighter. Mastercraft/Cooper have a 45 day satisfaction guarantee, so I can swap to a different Mastercraft tire, but the Courser Trail’s aren’t aggressive enough looking for me and unfortunately the 275/60R20 Courser Trail HD is still the heavier E rated. My fault for not doing more research on that before buying bc I told myself if I didn’t like the ride of the E rated one I’d just get the same tire in stock size P rated.
I know there are a few P rated 275/65R20 tires out there (Pirelli All Terrain Plus/Nitto Recon Grappler), but are more than I want to spend for what I’m not sure are better tires…and I hated my Pirelli Scorpion AT that were on my 2013 F150. So my second question is narrowing down 33” P rated tires with aggressive sidewall with the typical overall good ride quality, noise, etc. we all look for. Here’s what I have on my list so far:
1. Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac or Discount Tire exclusive UltraTerrain. I’ve seen mixed reviews on these for various reasons, such as noise, traction, balancing issues)
2. Falken Wildpeak AT3w. I’ve seen overwhelming positive reviews on these.
3. Discount Tire exclusive Cooper Discoverer ATP 2. I’ve seen mostly positive reviews on these as well. (The Cooper Discoverer AT3 LT and XLT are both E rated).
Edit: 4. Just came across Cooper Rugged Trek. Leaning towards these based on reviews I’ve seen so far or the Falken’s.
Any others I should consider?
Thanks!
