I purchased a 2021 F-150 2.7 with 20k miles and now I am at 30k. Since day one, it makes a rattling noise coming from the 10r80 at cold startup. It makes noise after the truck has been sitting for more than an hour and I start it again. Noise goes away after about 3 minutes but at times it makes it while stop and go driving.

I’ve taken it to 2 different dealers and they argue that it is a whining noise typical from the transmission and that it does not affect operation or durability. I am okay with the whining noise but this is not a whining noise to me. Any advice on what to do? Does anyone have the same issue? The transmission shifts ok but it’s just the noise that has become annoying as I do a lot of short trips.

Also, the noise is not coming come the wastegates or any loose exhaust heat shields. I recently did a transmission fluid service at my local dealer but did not notice any improvements.

I had something like that. It occurred when temps were below about 15ºF. Turned out to be low fluid. Make sure your dealer does the level check carefully, it's not an easy procedure.

I did an oil drain and fill a couple days ago at my local dealer. I would suppose that they checked fluid levels. Do you think that it might be worth it to go back and have them check the oil level?

Well... Yes. You might take it back in and just say you have this rattle that began after their drain & fill. The first time my dealer did a fluid and filter change the procedure (PowerBoost) was not clear and it took them awhile to get the level done correctly. Its just that difficult.

So this happened before the service? Checking fluid level isn't as easy as it should be, but its definitely easier on these trucks than my mustang. I'd run it up to temp then side under with it running an check the plug stick.

Hi there! Will you send us a message with your VIN and your local Ford dealer? I can look into things on my end.
